In the 2024 FRC game, it was necessary to climb a horizontal chain. As a last minute add, I was tasked by team 190 with leading a group of students to design/assemble a simple and compact climber with only 4 weeks before the competition. The climber used spring loaded telescoping tubes and a single "pull down" string per arm to lift the robot. It was fitted with pneumatics that engaged a gear rake, preventing the robot from falling off the chain. The assembly was fully designed with GD&T best practices in mind in about 2 weeks, and manufactured with the rest of the robot in 1 week. It was able to lift the 140lbs robot through its full 3-stage extension in about 0.45 seconds. Here is a video of a slower climb test taken while tuning the software.
